Meeting Roles

Meeting roles are assigned on a quarterly basis, but as schedules change there are often last minute openings for roles. Check out our meeting schedule Google Doc to view up to date openings and reach out to the Toastmaster to see if you can take on a role.  Contact the VP of Education for the link to the schedule.
Be sure to bring your Competent Leadership Manual to each meeting where you hold a meeting role. This way, you can receive credit and feedback on your participation during the meeting.
Toastmaster - is the meeting's director and handles the transitions between speaking roles. The Toastmaster is in charge of the individual meeting and ensures and every role is filled. They also prepare the meeting agenda for the week and selects (and collects the thoughts on) the Theme of the Day. The Toastmaster is responsible for updating the VP of Education with the members who had roles during the meetings so that we have a record of what happened during the meeting. See the Member Resources page for the meeting agenda template.

Table Topics Master - gives members who aren't assigned a speaking role the opportunity to speak during the meeting. If you are having trouble coming up with a topic, look up "Toastmasters table topics" in Google.

Table Topics Speaker - speaks on a topic selected by the Table Topics Master. The speaker will walk up to the lectern and give their thoughts on the topic. Try and speak for 1 to 2 minutes.

Timer - is responsible for monitoring the time for each meeting segment and each speaker. The timer will indicate the timing signal using the green, yellow and red cards for speakers, table topic speakers, and speech evaluators. The timer will also give a report during the meeting evaluation.

Grammarian - listens to everyone's grammar and word usage. The Grammarian selects a "Word of the Day" and let's the Toastmaster know ahead of time. Will report the Word of the Day usage at the end.
(Note: The Grammarian role at this club is combined with the Ah-counter role. The Ah-counter will count any words or sounds used as a crutch by anyone who speaks during the meeting.)

Speaker - will speak on their topic for generally 5-7 minutes, depending on the speech they are giving.

Speech Evaluator - gives a brief evaluation of the speaker. Reach out to the speaker before they speak in order to find out if there are specific areas or items to watch out for during their speech. Record your impressions and thoughts while being encouraging. Your evaluation should be 2 to 3 minutes.

General Evaluator - will ask the Grammarian and Timer to give their reports. They will also give an  evaluation of the meeting. Were the speech evaluations constructive and helpful? Was the room set up well?  Evaluate things such as timeliness, enthusiasm, preparation, organization, performance of duties, etc.  Take notes during the meeting on everything that happens and offer suggestions for improvement.
